Find the Problem Before You Dig.

Buried electrical lines are out of sight — until something goes wrong. A dead outdoor circuit, a failed landscape lighting run, or an underground feed that stops working can be difficult to diagnose without the right equipment. Joel Watsky Electric uses electronic wire tracing and fault locating tools to find exactly where the problem is, so repairs are targeted and excavation is minimal.

Precise Fault Location

Rather than guessing or digging up an entire run, we pinpoint the exact location of an open circuit, short, or ground fault. This eliminates unnecessary trenching and gets the circuit back in service faster.

Non-Destructive Tracing

We trace the path of buried wiring without digging by using electronic signal tracing equipment. This is especially valuable before excavation work or when you need to know where lines run before adding new circuits nearby.

Save Time and Money

Knowing exactly where a fault is located before any digging begins reduces labor, limits landscape disruption, and gets the repair done right the first time.

Underground Tracing & Fault Locating Services

For Residential and Commercial Properties Across Delmarva

Joel Watsky Electric provides wire tracing and fault locating for a wide range of buried electrical systems.

Outdoor & Landscape Lighting Circuits

Low voltage and line voltage landscape lighting runs are a common source of buried wire problems. We trace the circuit path and locate any faults causing fixtures to go dark.

Underground Service Feeds

Underground service conductors running from a meter base, transformer, or panel to an outbuilding, garage, or shed can develop faults over time. We trace and test these runs to locate the problem without full excavation.

Dead Outdoor Circuits

If an outdoor receptacle, pool equipment circuit, or exterior fixture has stopped working and there's no obvious cause, we can trace the underground portion of the circuit to find where it's failed.

Pre-Excavation Line Marking

Before landscaping, grading, or construction work, we can trace and mark the path of private electrical lines on your property so crews know where not to dig.

Pool & Spa Wiring

Underground wiring to pools, spas, and pump equipment is subject to moisture intrusion and physical damage. We locate faults in these runs and make the necessary repairs to restore safe operation.

Commercial Underground Circuits

Parking lot lighting, signage feeds, and other commercial underground circuits can be traced and fault-located to minimize downtime and avoid costly, disruptive excavation.

How Underground Wire Tracing Works

Electronic wire tracing uses a signal transmitter and a handheld receiver to follow the path of a buried conductor and detect where continuity is lost.

1. Connect the Signal Transmitter

We connect a transmitter to the circuit at an accessible point — typically at the panel, junction box, or fixture — and inject a signal onto the wire.

2. Trace the Line Path

Using a receiver above ground, we follow the signal along the buried route, marking the path of the conductor. This tells us where the wire runs and gives us a baseline for fault locating.

3. Locate the Fault

For open circuits or ground faults, we use additional testing techniques to narrow down and pinpoint the exact location where the conductor fails. The signal drops off or behaves differently at the fault point, allowing precise identification.

4. Targeted Repair

With the fault location known, excavation is limited to only the area needed. We expose, repair, and re-bury the wire, restoring the circuit with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you trace any buried wire?

We can trace most residential and commercial electrical conductors, including 120V and 240V circuits, underground service feeds, and low voltage wiring. The wire needs to have some accessible connection point to attach the transmitter signal.

What types of faults can you locate?

We can locate open circuits (broken or corroded conductors), short circuits (conductors touching), and ground faults (conductor contacting earth or conduit). Each fault type requires slightly different testing techniques, but all can be pinpointed without full excavation.

How accurate is the fault location?

With the right conditions, we can typically pinpoint a fault within a foot or two. Depth, soil conditions, and nearby metal can affect accuracy slightly, but the location is always precise enough to target excavation to a small area rather than digging up an entire run.

My outdoor circuit is dead but it's not underground — can you still help?

Yes. We troubleshoot all outdoor electrical circuits, above ground and below. If the problem turns out to be a tripped GFCI, a failed connection in a junction box, or a damaged above-ground section of wiring, we'll find it and fix it.

Do you handle the repair after locating the fault?

Yes. We don't just find the problem — we fix it. Once the fault is located, we excavate, make the repair, weatherproof the connection, and restore the circuit. You don't need to hire a separate crew for the repair.
